Professor Laura Hubner is a distinguished academic at the University of Winchester, affiliated with the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD in Film from the University of Reading and specializes in European cinema, Gothic horror, and fairy-tale film. Her research explores gender, identity, and the body in cinematic contexts.
Her teaching spans Film Studies, Media and Communication, and English Literature, with modules like 'Music and Film' and 'Fairytale and Gothic Horror'. She has authored/co-edited eight books including Fairytale and Gothic Horror: Uncanny Transformations in Film (2018) and The Zombie Renaissance in Popular Culture (2014).
Prof. Hubner’s publications frequently engage with Ingmar Bergman’s filmography, including keynote lectures at the Ingmar Bergman 100 Years Jubilee Conference (2018). Her work has been honored with the Best Box-Set Award at Bologna’s Il Cinema Ritrovato Festival and the US Children’s Literature Association Honor Book Award.
She coordinates interdisciplinary events like the ‘Framing Film’ Conference and serves on editorial boards for journals like Studies in European Cinema. Her Iconic Movie Images blog showcases student/staff analyses of cinematic milestones.
Prof. Hubner is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She actively participates in public engagements, including BBC Radio 4’s In Our Time (2023) and Bergman Week festivals in Sweden.
