Dr Frances Howie is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Apprenticeships & CPD at the University of Worcester. With over 30 years of experience in senior public health roles, she specializes in integrating public health expertise into academic education. She previously served as Director of Public Health in Worcestershire and has held roles in Herefordshire, Birmingham, and other regions. Her qualifications include a PhD in Sociology from the University of Kent, an MSc in Public Health from the University of Birmingham, and a BA in Sociology from the University of Sussex.
Dr Howie’s research focuses on health inequalities, social prescribing, and inner-city community midwifery. She teaches public health across its three domains (health improvement, health protection, and healthcare public health) and supervises PhDs on Physician Associate Prescribing and Social Prescribing. She is also involved in the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice program.
Externally, she serves as Deputy Faculty Advisor for the West Midlands region of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH) and as a verifier and specialist assessor for the UK Public Health Register (UKPHR). Her professional experience spans leadership in improving health and well-being through evidence-based practice.
