Foster Johns (He/Him) is an Assistant Professor of Teaching at Wayne State University, specializing in voice and speech training for performers. He has previously held teaching and coaching positions at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theater, and Dance; Washtenaw Community College; Michigan State University; the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program; and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music Acting Program. As a certified Knight-Thompson Speechwork instructor, he bridges academic training with professional practice in vocal development.

His research explores the intersection of ethnomethodology and vocal expression, focusing on preserving endangered accents (e.g., American Elizabethan) through studies of isolation factors and climate change. He also investigates inclusive pedagogical practices for dialogic voice training in marginalized communities, including queer and BIPOC voices. Foster has coached over 80 university and professional theater productions, working with directors like Joanne Akalaitis and Mary Zimmerman.
As a Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA) member, he has served on multiple committees and received the 2021 VASTA Service Award. He maintains an active voice practice, Fojo Voiceworks, catering to professional voice users, gender-diverse clients, and individuals seeking authentic vocal expression.
