Dr. Foon Yin Lai is an Associate Professor at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), affiliated with the Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment. She earned her PhD in 2014 at the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Sciences (QAEHS), University of Queensland (UQ), under the supervision of Professor Jochen Mueller, followed by a two-year postdoctoral research period. Since 2014, she has maintained an honorary research fellowship with QAEHS while leading her research group at SLU.
Her research focuses on:
- Chemical use and exposure in populations through influent wastewater analysis
- Environmental impacts of emerging contaminants from wastewater discharge/reuse
- Antimicrobial resistance propagation
- Endocrine disruption effects
- Wastewater-based epidemiology for monitoring (il)licit drugs and new psychoactive substances
Her work bridges environmental health sciences and aquatic toxicology, with active collaborations between SLU and QAEHS on wastewater surveillance strategies.
