Univ.-Prof. Dr. Florian Rödl is a Professor of Civil Law, Labor, and Social Law at the Free University of Berlin, where he holds the Chair of Civil Law, Labor and Social Law within the Department of Law. He concurrently serves as a Judge of the Constitutional Court of Berlin. His academic work focuses on foundational principles of the German Civil Code (BGB), residential tenancy law with an emphasis on affordable housing challenges, and labor law dynamics including collective aspects and labor market anomalies. He actively supervises research projects through hiring student and scientific employees, and advocates for academic freedom as evidenced by his public statement on the cancellation of a controversial university event.
Research interests include doctrinal analysis of civil law, the socio-legal significance of housing and work as personal development spheres, and critiques of land and labor market structures. His professional activities extend to interdisciplinary teaching collaborations, such as coordinating legal education modules for economics students through the 'Legal Teaching' working group with the Department of Economics.
Prof. Rödl’s current initiatives include establishing a law clinic focused on residential tenancy law, as outlined in recent student employment postings. He maintains an active role in university governance, emphasizing institutional autonomy and the imperative to protect spaces for contentious academic discourse under Article 5(3) of the German Basic Law.
