Florian Meirer is an Associate Professor in the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis research group at Utrecht University, part of the Institute for Sustainable and Circular Chemistry (ISCC). His research focuses on functional materials, catalysis, environmental analysis, and data-driven approaches. He leads projects on heterogeneous catalysis, nanoplastics detection, and sustainable chemistry.
Research interests include advanced spectro-microscopic techniques (e.g., X-ray microscopy, tomography) to study nanomaterials in catalysis and environmental contexts. Key projects involve the UPlasticS3 network to detect nanoplastics in environmental matrices and biological tissues. Meirer also explores decision support systems for art conservators using hyperspectral imaging.
Recent work emphasizes plastic recycling via catalytic pyrolysis and understanding catalyst deactivation mechanisms. Collaborations include studies on cobalt carbide formation in Fischer-Tropsch catalysts and CO₂ reduction over copper-based electrocatalysts.
Lab affiliations include the Inorganic Chemistry and Catalysis group, with access to synchrotron facilities and advanced microscopy tools. Meirer’s work bridges fundamental material science with applied challenges in sustainability and environmental health.
