Dr. Lichtin's research focuses on environmental politics, particularly on how inequalities affect public acceptance of climate change mitigation policies and how different compensation mechanisms can increase support for these policies. His work examines mobility behavior and public opinion through the Swiss Mobility Panel, a longitudinal study measuring Swiss citizens' opinions and preferences on mobility and related behaviors. His research sits at the intersection of political science, environmental policy, and transportation studies, with a strong emphasis on empirical methods and survey experimentation.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a consistent focus on understanding public acceptance of environmental and transportation policies. His work frequently employs experimental survey methods to examine citizen preferences regarding road pricing, public transport expansion, and electric vehicle taxation. A key theme across his research is identifying how policy design elements affect public support, with particular attention to equity considerations and funding mechanisms. His studies often reveal that support for environmental policies increases when revenue is earmarked for related public goods and when policies account for differential impacts across socioeconomic groups.
As part of the Swiss Mobility Panel research team, Dr. Lichtin contributes to one of Switzerland's most comprehensive longitudinal studies of mobility behavior and attitudes. His professional experience includes research internships at the University of Lucerne's Department of Political Science, where he worked on comparative environmental politics. Outside academia, he has experience with environmental and student/youth organizations, providing practical context to his scholarly work.
