Florian Kriener

Florian Kriener, Dr. iur., is a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law. He serves as Assistant Editor of the Max Planck Encyclopedia of International Law and has lectured at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. His academic career spans research at King's College London, internships at the German Embassy in Santiago de Chile, and legal practice at Baker McKenzie and the Inter-American Court for Human Rights.

Kriener's research focuses on the Prohibition of Intervention, Use of Force in International Law, Nonviolent Protest Movements, and Democracy Promotion. His articles explore tensions between sovereignty and state support for protests, CSTO interventions, and legal frameworks for cyber operations. Recent works analyze the ICJ’s role in conflicts like Ukraine v. Russia and the application of the Genocide Convention.

Scientific awards include scholarships from the German National Academic Foundation, Heinrich Böll Foundation, and recognition as ASIL 2023 New Voice in International Law. He is a member of the European Society of International Law, American Society of International Law, and the Academic Advisory Board of the Heidelberg Journal of International Law, with peer-review contributions to major legal publications.
