Prof. Florian Grebien is a Professor and head of the Institute of Medical Biochemistry at the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, and a Principal Investigator at St. Anna Children’s Cancer Research Institute (St. Anna CCRI). His research focuses on molecular mechanisms of oncoprotein-driven leukemia, particularly fusion proteins in pediatric leukemias, aiming to identify therapeutic targets. He leads the Grebien Group at St. Anna CCRI, leveraging collaborations between clinical and academic institutions.
Education:
- PhD from Medical University of Vienna (2007), supervised by Ernst Müllner and Hartmut Beug.
- Postdoctoral training with Giulio Superti-Furga at CeMM, Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Research Interests: Investigating fusion proteins in cancer, leveraging experimental leukemia models to identify therapeutic targets. His work emphasizes precision medicine by targeting proteins absent in normal cells.
Awards: Recipient of a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grant for cancer research.
Advising & Grants: Led research groups at Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Cancer Research (LBI-CR) and currently bridges veterinary and pediatric oncology through St. Anna CCRI-University collaborations. His ERC grant supported earlier work on blood cancer mechanisms.
Labs & Teams: Directs the Grebien Group at St. Anna CCRI, integrating experimental and clinical approaches to advance pediatric leukemia therapies.
