Florent Masse is Professor of the Practice in the Department of French and Italian at Princeton University, serving as Director of L’Avant-Scène (French Theater Workshop) and Artistic Director of the annual Seuls en Scène French Theater Festival since 2001.
His research centers on French theatrical practice, directing over sixty productions spanning Molière, Racine, Feydeau, and contemporary playwrights like NDiaye and Pommerat. He pioneered a methodology integrating linguistic training with dramatic performance, creating immersive language-learning experiences through theater. Masse has initiated international student enrichment programs and hosted prominent French artists for master classes at Princeton.
Through L’Avant-Scène and Seuls en Scène, Masse mentors students in theatrical production and performance. He is currently developing future festival editions and scholarly publications on his curatorial work, expanding French theater’s pedagogical impact at Princeton.
