Dr. Florence Bonacina-Pugh is a Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Language Education at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education and Sport, where she co-leads the Language(s), Interculturality, and Literacies Research Hub. She holds a PhD in Linguistics (ESRC-funded) and an MSc in Applied Linguistics (British Council-funded). Her research focuses on Language Policy, Multilingualism, and Translanguaging in educational contexts, with a particular interest in young language learners and community language education.
Her academic roles include serving as Associate Editor for Language Policy, Member of the Editorial Board for Current Issues in Language Planning, and Co-Chair of the British Association of Applied Linguistics' Language Policy Special Interest Group (2017–2024). She has secured over £277,000 in research funding, leading projects on language policy in multilingual universities and citizenship discourse in Scotland. She also chairs La Petite Ecole d’Edimbourg, a French complementary school, overseeing 14 teachers and 150 students.
Dr. Bonacina-Pugh’s research emphasizes empirical approaches to language policy, translanguaging pedagogy, and the sociolinguistic analysis of multilingual interaction. Her work has been recognized through nominations for the James E. Alatis Prize and her leadership in advancing empirical research methodologies in language policy.
