Flemming Nielsen

Flemming Nielsen is a Senior Researcher and Laboratory Manager at the University of Southern Denmark’s Department of Health Services Research. With a Ph.D. in Environmental Medicine and an M.Sc. in Chemistry, he has dedicated his career to analytical chemistry and environmental health research. He leads the occupational health and safety group for Environmental Medicine and Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacy.

Research Interests:

His research focuses on the development and application of advanced analytical methods to measure environmental pollutants in human biological samples. He investigates the neurotoxic, immunotoxic, and endocrine-disrupting effects of substances such as PCBs, PFCs, pesticides, and mercury. His expertise includes chromatography (HPLC, LC-MS/MS, GC, GC-MS), sample preparation techniques, and biomarker development for endocrine disrupting substances.

Research Themes and Impact:

His recent publications reflect a strong emphasis on large-scale epidemiological studies, particularly within the Odense Child Cohort, examining how early-life exposure to environmental chemicals affects neurodevelopment, motor skills, and endocrine outcomes. These studies use rigorous analytical chemistry to quantify exposures and link them to health outcomes in children.

Scientific Contributions:

Flemming Nielsen has contributed to over 170 peer-reviewed publications and is actively involved in international collaborations. He regularly presents at conferences and workshops, sharing his expertise in analytical chemistry and environmental health.
