Amalie Timmermann is an environmental epidemiologist and Associate Professor in Epidemiology and Interventions at the National Institute of Public Health, University of Southern Denmark. She holds a PhD in Epidemiology and Environmental Medicine from the University of Southern Denmark (2016) and a Cand.scient.san.publ. from the University of Copenhagen (2011).
Her research focuses on the health effects of environmental chemicals, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), with emphasis on breastfeeding, immune effects, and the gut microbiome. She leads research projects funded by a Sapere Aude starting grant and serves as an expert for the CDC Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), Danish Health Authority, and Ministry of the Environment.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals significant work on PFAS exposure impacts across multiple domains: vaccine response attenuation in children and adults (particularly for SARS-CoV-2 and childhood vaccines), disruption of breastfeeding duration, thyroid hormone interference during pregnancy, and increased infection susceptibility. Her methodological approaches combine large cohort studies (Odense Child Cohort, Guinea-Bissau cohorts), register-based epidemiology, and biomarker analysis.
Scientific Awards:
- Sapere Aude starting grant
She actively contributes to public health discourse through 48 media appearances and serves as a peer reviewer for multiple journals. Her work bridges environmental exposure assessment with clinical outcomes, particularly in vulnerable populations including infants, pregnant women, and Arctic communities.
