Dr. Fiona Stanaway is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Sydney's School of Public Health and holds an Associate Professor role in the Master of Clinical Epidemiology Program. Since 2003, she has contributed to research addressing health disparities in ethnically diverse populations, particularly older migrants. Her work focuses on social determinants, cardiovascular disease, and aging, leveraging large-scale datasets like the Concord Health and Ageing in Men Project (CHAMP). She is also a key advisor on the Therapeutic Goods Administration's Medical Devices Committee and leads projects on cultural adaptation of health measures for Chinese migrants.
Education includes an MBBS (Hons) from the University of Queensland, an MPH, and a PhD in Epidemiology from the University of Sydney. Her research interests span epidemiological methods, ethnic inequalities, and healthy aging. She has pioneered studies on transnational relationships in migrant communities and data linkage initiatives to study ethnic health disparities. Recent projects include the MRFF-funded study on cardiovascular disease inequalities and the COMFORT trial on low back pain therapies.
In teaching, Fiona emphasizes evidence-based practice for clinicians and has developed innovative online resources. Her pedagogical contributions were recognized with the 2020 VC Award for Outstanding Teaching and an AAUT Citation. She also co-convenes the Australasian Association of Epidemiology's teaching special interest group. Fiona's multilingual skills (Mandarin, Italian, French, and conversational Spanish) enhance her community engagement, including visa health screenings.
