Prof Fiona Smith is a Research Professor at the University of Sussex Business School and the UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO), specializing in international trade law with a focus on agricultural trade. She holds a PhD (part-time) from the University of Leicester and has held academic positions at Leeds, Warwick, UCL, Leicester, and Sheffield Universities. Her work bridges law, policy, and global food systems, addressing sustainability and resilience in agrifood supply chains. She has advised UK parliamentary committees, the European Commission, and contributed to DEFRA’s Balance of Competence Review. Currently co-leading the Horizon Europe-funded FoSTA-Health project and the Co-Centre for Sustainable Food Systems on Ireland, she focuses on facilitating African-EU agricultural trade and reducing supply chain impacts on climate and biodiversity. She is a member of the UK Trade and Agriculture Commission, scrutinizing free trade agreements’ environmental and animal welfare standards.
