Fiona McDonnell

Fiona McDonnell is an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology at the University of Utah. Her research focuses on glaucoma pathophysiology, particularly the role of the conventional outflow pathway (trabecular meshwork, Schlemm’s canal, and distal vessels) in intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation. She investigates extracellular vesicles (EVs) as biomarkers and therapeutic tools for glaucoma, alongside the biomechanics and pharmacological regulation of distal outflow vessels.

Her research highlights the altered cargo of EVs in glaucomatous trabecular meshwork cells, emphasizing their potential for disease detection and treatment. She also explores the vasoactivity of distal vessels, identifying pharmacological targets to lower IOP. Her work bridges molecular biology and clinical ophthalmology, addressing both normal and glaucomatous IOP homeostasis.

Recent publications focus on extracellular vesicle proteomics, biomechanical modeling of glaucoma, and consensus methodologies for outflow facility studies. Her lab’s findings on EVs and distal vessel regulation represent key advancements in glaucoma diagnostics and therapies. Collaborative efforts include developing standardized models for ocular hypertension research.
