Mark Johnson is a Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Professor of Ophthalmology (by courtesy) at Northwestern University's McCormick School of Engineering. His research focuses on ocular biomechanics, particularly in glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration. He holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and has extensive experience in fluid dynamics, transport phenomena, and cellular mechanics.
Education: B.S. in Mathematics and Interdisciplinary Engineering from Purdue University (1975); S.M. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT (1981, 1987).
Research Interests: Ocular biomechanics, aqueous humor outflow pathways, Bruch's membrane pathology, and chaos in deterministic systems. His lab investigates targeted nanoparticle therapies for glaucoma and explores lipid accumulation in AMD. He teaches courses in fluid mechanics and transport fundamentals.
Grants & Funding: NIH-funded projects on Schlemm's canal endothelial stiffness and McCormick Catalyst Awards for cell phenotype studies. His work includes collaborative efforts with Harvard Medical School and MIT.
Labs/Teams: Johnson Ocular and Biofluids Transport Lab. Current projects include cell-softening micelle delivery and genetic engineering approaches for glaucoma treatment.
