Associate Professor Fiona Martin is an Honorary Associate in the Discipline of Media and Communications at the University of Sydney. She holds affiliations with the Sydney Environment Institute and the Charles Perkins Centre. Her research focuses on digital journalism, media governance, and platform regulation, with notable works including Digital Platform Regulation: Global Perspectives on Internet Governance (2022) and Sharing News Online (2019). Fiona sits on the editorial boards of Digital Journalism and Journal of Digital Media & Policy, and holds leadership roles in IAMCR and JERAA. Her recent projects address issues like hate speech regulation in the Asia Pacific and generative AI governance. Fiona has 20 years of journalism and broadcasting experience, and her teaching focuses on digital media ethics and policy. She currently supervises three PhD students exploring topics like TikTok influencer representation and podcasting strategies in legacy media.
Her research interests span digital media governance, public service media sustainability, and participatory media practices. Notable grants include Australia's Digital Platforms Inquiry analysis (2019) and a Facebook award for hate speech research in Asia Pacific (2019). Fiona has collaborated on over 50 publications, including edited volumes and policy submissions, and frequently contributes to public discourse on social media regulation via platforms like The Conversation.
