Rosalie Gillett

Rosalie Gillett is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Queensland University of Technology (QUT), affiliated with the Creative Industries Faculty and the Digital Media Research Centre (DMRC). She holds a PhD from QUT’s School of Justice (2019). Her research focuses on online gender-based violence, platform governance, and the normalization of abuse in digital spaces, particularly on dating apps like Tinder and toxic subcultures such as incel communities. She has been awarded a Facebook Content Governance grant to study user circumvention of content moderation policies.

Education: PhD (Queensland University of Technology, 2019); prior academic training in justice studies and digital media. Her work bridges sociological analysis with policy critique, examining how platforms balance self-regulation and user safety.

Research Interests: Rosalie’s studies critically analyze women’s experiences of harassment on digital platforms, the efficacy of platform governance strategies, and the societal impacts of toxic online cultures. She emphasizes the role of platform design in enabling or mitigating harm, and advocates for more transparent content moderation practices.

Awards/Grants: Received Facebook Content Governance grant (2024) for research on user evasion of moderation policies. Active in policy submissions, including responses to Australia’s Online Safety Bill and Digital Platforms Inquiry.
