Dr. Fiona Haarer is a Lecturer in Ancient Languages at King's College London's Department of Classics, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts & Humanities and the Centre for Late Antique & Medieval Studies. She holds degrees from St Hilda’s College, Oxford, including a DPhil in Byzantine Studies focused on Emperor Anastasius I. Her research emphasizes 5th-6th century transitions from classical to medieval worlds, governance, and Greek literary development. She directs the London Summer School in Classics & Ancient Languages and chairs the 22nd International Byzantine Congress.
Education: BA Classics (Oxford), MPhil/ DPhil Byzantine Studies (Oxford).
Research interests include late antique urban governance, pagan festival transformations, and the interplay of classical and vernacular writing. She edits the Bulletin of British Byzantine Studies and co-edited the congress proceedings for the 2006 London Byzantine Studies event.
Key projects include the Anthology of Byzantine Greek and the archaeological study The Isaurian Triumph. Her work spans historiography, epistolary analysis, and imperial biography, with recent focus on Justinian's era. Awards include the Society of Antiquaries Fellowship (2010).
Teaching responsibilities include MA-level Greek language instruction. She advises on grants such as the Higher Education Academy-funded Greek anthology project (2007-2008). Active in professional networks, she chairs Byzantine studies conferences and advises the Oxford Dictionary of Late Antiquity.
