Rebecca Armstrong is an Associate Professor in Classical Languages and Literature and a Fellow and Tutor in Classics at St Hilda’s College, University of Oxford. She holds a BA, MSt, and DPhil from Oxford. Her research focuses on the poetry and culture of the late Roman Republic and early Empire, with publications on Ovid’s love poetry, myths in Latin literature, and ecocritical analyses of plants in Vergil’s work. Current projects explore weeds and temporal concepts through ancient botanical imagery.
Teaching includes Latin literature, language, and Greek texts in tutorials. She lectures on Vergil’s Aeneid, Roman literature, Ovid, and Latin Didactic Poetry. She has supervised graduate students in Latin poetry studies at Masters and DPhil levels. Her academic career includes roles at Balliol and Somerville Colleges before joining St Hilda’s in 2004 as Mary Bennett Fellow and Tutor.
