Peter Haarer is a Lecturer in Ancient History at Keble College, University of Oxford, and Director of Studies in Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (CAAH). He holds a BA (hons) in Archaeology & Ancient History and Greek from the University of Bristol and a DPhil in Ancient History from Balliol College, Oxford. His research focuses on two primary areas: the socio-cultural role of iron in Archaic Greece and the emergence of alphabetic writing systems in the ancient Greek world. He is currently analyzing iron billets from the Kyrenia shipwreck (early 3rd century BC) and exploring retrograde letters in archaic inscriptions.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on Greek history (650–479 BC), Athenian democracy, Alexander the Great, and site/museum reports for CAAH candidates. He directs the Practical Epigraphy Workshop, a hands-on international training program for studying inscriptions.
His work with the Anne Jeffery Archive led to the creation of Poinikastas, a digital resource for archaic Greek inscriptions. Research projects question centralized theories of alphabet design, emphasizing decentralized experimentation across the Greek world.
