Fiona Greenland is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on Art/Science Studies, Art Markets, and Cultural Sociology, with a strong emphasis on Historical Methods and Social Theory. She investigates intersections of cultural production, power dynamics, and materiality, particularly through case studies involving art crime, antiquities trafficking, and conflict zones.
Her work explores how cultural objects mediate social relations, including studies of the ISIS antiquities trade, Italian cultural policy, and the ethics of satellite imagery in conflict research. She critiques frameworks of value in art markets and examines how historical narratives shape contemporary cultural practices. Methodologically, she combines archival research, ethnography, and interdisciplinary approaches.
Notable research themes include the militarization of cultural heritage, the socio-political dimensions of art restitution, and the role of visual evidence in documenting conflict. Her scholarship challenges conventional understandings of cultural preservation, institutional power structures, and the commodification of artistic labor.
