Fiona Rose Greenland is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Virginia, with a courtesy appointment in Anthropology. She holds affiliations with the Global Commerce in Culture and Society program and serves as founder/director of the CURIA Lab (Cultural Resilience Informatics and Analysis Lab). Her research focuses on cultural sociology, art and artifacts in political conflict, and comparative historical methods. Current roles include a 2024-25 Senior Fellowship at the Käte Hamburger Kolleg, Universität des Saarlandes.
Research interests span cultural violence, state formation, material culture, and ethnographic methods. Notable works include *Ruling Culture: Art Police, Tomb Robbers, and the Rise of Cultural Power in Italy* (2021), awarded the Mary Douglas Prize, and co-edited volumes like *Cultural Violence and the Destruction of Human Communities* (2020). Greenland’s articles address antiquities trafficking, art market scandals, and the role of materiality in consecration processes.
Her recent work integrates satellite imagery analysis and interdisciplinary crisis research, particularly in Syria. Grants include leadership in the Conflict Observatory Ukraine’s cultural investigations (US State Dept-funded). Awards highlight her contributions to cultural sociology and comparative historical frameworks.
