Filippa Chatzistavrou serves as Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the School of Economics and Political Sciences, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). Her expertise spans European governance, interest groups, comparative institutions, and critical state theory within global politics, with particular focus on Greek political dynamics during economic crises.
Her academic foundation includes a PhD in Political Science from the University of Paris I Panthéon-Sorbonne (thesis: "An intergovernmental reading of the European political system"), a Master's in Comparative Politics from the same institution, and a Law degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
Chatzistavrou's research critically examines power structures in EU governance, dominance mechanisms in European politics, and interest group influence through biographical approaches to political sociology. Her work reveals how austerity measures reshaped Greek democracy and how digital capitalism transforms state-capital relations, consistently highlighting tensions between national sovereignty and supranational governance.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications (2016-2025) shows evolving focus from historical EU integration studies toward contemporary crises: Greek debt negotiations, pandemic politics, and emerging challenges to European democracy. Key thematic clusters include EU institutional adaptation, interest group dynamics, and the erosion of representative democracy during austerity.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program 2023-2024 (UC Berkeley)
- Fernand Braudel Fellowship
- Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Fellowship
- Fondation Robert Schuman research grant
- NATO scientific research grant
Chatzistavrou actively secures research funding through Horizon 2020, Erasmus+, and Jean Monnet Actions, currently coordinating the "Citizen lobbying and policy change in Europe" module (2023-2025). While specific advisees aren't documented, she teaches undergraduate and postgraduate courses at NKUA and previously at Sciences Po Strasbourg/Paris. Her collaborative network spans the Center for European Studies and Comparative Politics (SciencesPo), UC Berkeley Sociology Department, and ELIAMEP research foundation.
