Dr. Filipa Cox is a Senior Lecturer in Earth and Environmental Sciences at The University of Manchester, affiliated with the Manchester Environmental Research Institute and the Dalton Nuclear Institute. Her research focuses on fungal ecology, particularly mycorrhizal fungi’s roles in nutrient cycling, plant growth, and carbon sequestration under climate change. She employs isotopic tracers and molecular techniques to study mutualistic plant-fungal partnerships and their responses to environmental shifts.
Key research interests include microbial community dynamics in peatlands, Antarctic soil microbiology, and the impacts of nitrogen availability on mycorrhizal symbiosis. She holds a UKRI Future Leader Fellowship (2020), recognizing her contributions to understanding ecosystem resilience under global change.
Her work bridges ecological and environmental science disciplines, with recent studies addressing tree growth-mycorrhizal linkages across Europe and novel techniques for mapping soil phosphorus distribution. She collaborates widely, contributing to initiatives like the European forest inventory and Antarctic soil degradation studies.
