Ass.-Prof. Dr. Mark Anthony is an Assistant Professor at the University of Vienna's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science. He leads the Fungal Ecology Lab within the Centre for Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science. His research focuses on fungal community ecology, mycorrhizal symbiosis, and ecosystem responses to global environmental changes such as climate warming and invasive species.
Anthony's work employs genomic tools and experimental approaches to study how fungal networks influence forest productivity, soil carbon storage, and plant-fungal interactions. Key projects include investigating mycorrhizal fungi's role in climate change adaptation and microbiome engineering to enhance plant growth.
- Received SNSF Ambizione Fellowship and WWTF Vienna Research Groups grant
- Collaborates on global change experiments involving soil carbon dynamics and microbial adaptation
- Teaching activities available via University of Vienna's u:find portal
His lab group includes 6 current students/postdocs studying fungal biodiversity, plant-microbe symbiosis, and ecological networks. Ongoing research explores microbiome engineering applications and the resilience of dryland fungal communities to environmental stressors.
Research highlights include discovering unexpected soil carbon flux patterns under combined warming/nitrogen scenarios and demonstrating mycorrhizal fungi's critical role in buffering plant stress responses.
