Fiamma Straneo is a Gordon McKay Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering and Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Harvard University. She joined Harvard in 2024 after holding positions as a Professor of Polar Science at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2017–2024) and Scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (2001–2017). Her work focuses on polar climate systems, including ocean-ice interactions, Arctic freshwater export, and sea level rise.
Research Interests: Straneo’s group employs innovative data collection methods (e.g., icebreakers, autonomous vehicles, community partnerships) to study high-latitude oceans and climate. Key areas include understanding the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, low-emission data collection, and integrating traditional knowledge with scientific practices.
Labs/Teams: The Straneo Research Group emphasizes collaborative science, FAIR data principles, and community engagement. Their work bridges field observations, modeling, and societal impacts, with a focus on fostering junior scientists in an inclusive environment.
