Fernanda Martins is a Visiting Professor at Vermont College of Fine Arts (College of Fine Arts, Department of Graphic Design), where she teaches Design and Typography. Her research investigates Brazilian Graphic Memory and Typography in the Amazon region, with a focus on traditional Amazonian boat painters and their decorative lettering practices.

Her project Letras que Flutuam (Floating Letters) was selected for the Rumos–Itaú Cultural program in 2016, resulting in the documentary Marajó das Letras, and earned her the Rodrigo de Mello Franco de Andrade Award (2018) from Brazil's Ministry of Culture–IPHAN, the country's most prestigious cultural heritage prize, alongside an award at the Bienal Intermericana de Diseño in Madrid.
