Ferhat Zengul

Ferhat Zengul is a Tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), with a secondary appointment in the School of Medicine. He holds additional roles as a Scientist in the Center for Integrated Systems at the School of Engineering. His academic background includes a PhD in Health Services Administration, an MBA in Finance, and a Master of Accounting from UAB, alongside a Bachelor of Science from the University of Istanbul.

Zengul's research focuses on improving organizational and public health outcomes through data analytics, with expertise in accounting, healthcare finance, informatics, and infrastructure projects. He has pioneered machine learning applications in healthcare financial and clinical performance research, including predictive modeling and text mining across disciplines like nephrology and healthcare economics. His work has been recognized with awards such as the 2025 Best Paper Award in Knowledge Management and UAB's 2018 Dean's Mentorship Award.

Zengul teaches courses on healthcare finance, economics, and informatics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He has mentored numerous doctoral students, contributing to over 50 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. His research infrastructure includes a health services data warehouse developed with NSF funding, enabling interdisciplinary studies on hospital operations, quality metrics, and financial performance.

He has secured grants totaling $500k+, including NSF awards for health data platforms and BD2K fellowships for translational research. His service spans roles as a journal reviewer, conference organizer, and guest lecturer on topics like secondary data analysis and research ethics. Zengul also advises the UAB Hospital Medicine-Health Services Administration Research Collaborative and has engaged in international teaching at Hamdan Bin Mohammed Smart University.
