Fenyong Liu is a Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on human herpesviruses, particularly cytomegalovirus (CMV), and the development of antiviral agents. He has also contributed to interdisciplinary projects addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, including CO2-based decontamination of personal protective equipment and antiviral compound discovery.
- Education: PhD in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (University of Chicago, 1992), MS in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (University of Chicago, 1989), BS in Biology (University of Science and Technology of China, 1986).
Liu’s research spans virology, molecular biology, and public health. He discovered the herpes simplex virus protease during his PhD and continues exploring viral mechanisms and therapeutic interventions. His recent work on CMV and SARS-CoV-2 emphasizes translational applications for disease prevention and treatment.
The three media articles highlight Liu’s career narrative, his leadership in herpesvirus research, and collaborative pandemic response efforts. They reflect his interdisciplinary approach, bridging virology, RNA biochemistry, and public health policy.
Liu attributes his success to familial and mentorship support. He trained under Nobel laureate Sidney Altman at Yale and Bernard Roizman at the University of Chicago, both renowned virologists. His lab collaborates with the College of Engineering and private sector partners on antiviral innovations.
