Felipe Murtinho

Felipe Murtinho is an Associate Professor and Director of the International Studies Program at Seattle University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Public Affairs and Nonprofit Leadership. He is affiliated with the Environmental Studies Program. His work bridges academia and practice in Human-Environment relations, focusing on Latin American rural communities' adaptation to environmental changes and natural resource governance.

He holds a PhD in Geography from the University of California Santa Barbara, specializing in Human-Environment interactions, alongside a Master’s in Environmental Economics and a BA in Economics from Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia. His teaching emphasizes research methods, data analysis, and their applications to socio-environmental issues.

Murtinho’s research explores how communities in the Global South adapt to environmental challenges, particularly in water, páramo, and forest management. He has published extensively on Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES), communal governance, and climate adaptation strategies in Latin America. His work integrates field studies, GIS mapping, and participatory methodologies.

He actively involves students in research projects, offering hands-on experience in questionnaire design, statistical analysis, and spatial mapping. Murtinho collaborates with international organizations and has conducted fieldwork across Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, and Nicaragua.
