Felicity Hill is a Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of St Andrews' School of History. She joined the university in 2019 after holding a research fellowship at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, and previously served as a fellow at the Institute of Historical Research. Her research focuses on social and religious history, particularly the impact of excommunication in medieval England. Hill holds a PhD from the University of East Anglia, an MA from UCL, and a BA from the University of Manchester.
Her current research examines the role of excommunication as a tool of mass communication in medieval society, exploring how secular and ecclesiastical authorities disseminated information through oral proclamations. This builds on her forthcoming book, Excommunication in Thirteenth-Century England: Community, Politics and Publicity (Oxford University Press), which analyzes the social, political, and spiritual consequences of excommunication.
Hill’s work bridges legal, social, and religious history, with a focus on topics like pastoral care, lay piety, and medieval communication mechanisms. She currently advises postgraduate students and has published extensively on medieval ecclesiastical practices and their societal implications.
