Felicia M. Mensah is a Professor of Science and Education and Chair of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology at Teachers College, Columbia University. She holds a Ph.D. in Science Education from Florida State University and has served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Michigan State University. Her work focuses on equity, diversity, and social justice in science education, particularly addressing systemic barriers faced by marginalized groups in STEM. Dr. Mensah has authored numerous influential publications on culturally relevant pedagogy, Black women in STEM, and anti-racist teaching practices.
Her educational background includes a B.S. in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an M.S. in Biology and Secondary Education from North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University. She has held roles such as Associate Dean at Teachers College and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Research in Science Teaching (2020–2025). Her research explores science teacher identity, critical race theory, and the intersectionality of race and gender in education.
Dr. Mensah’s research interests include urban education, multicultural curriculum development, and preparing teachers of color. She has pioneered programs to support doctoral students and junior faculty in achieving tenure and advancing their careers. Her recent articles highlight anti-racist pedagogy, neoliberal influences in education, and the experiences of Black women in STEM fields. She has received the AERA Early Career Award (2012) and is a sought-after speaker and mentor in academic writing and publishing.
Her professional development workshops emphasize practical strategies for scholarly writing, grant writing, and navigating academic publishing. She also leads initiatives to diversify the teaching profession and promote equity in STEM education through culturally responsive practices.
