Feifei Shen is a PhD Researcher in the Department of Law at the European University Institute (EUI), joining the institution in cohort 2024. She works under the supervision of Professor Silvia Suteu on her doctoral thesis titled "The Erasure of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in China's Courts."
Her educational background includes:
- LLM in Human Rights from the China University of Political Science and Law and the University of Hong Kong
- Participation in the Visiting Fellowship Programme at the University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law
Shen's research focuses on human rights law with particular emphasis on gender, sexuality, and judicial systems in China. Her work bridges theoretical legal scholarship with practical advocacy, examining how courts address (or erase) issues related to sexual orientation and gender identity through a socio-legal lens. She has developed expertise in equality law and anti-discrimination frameworks within Chinese legal contexts.
She serves as editor of the Anti-Discrimination Law Review, described as the only publication in China dedicated specifically to anti-discrimination law, and is a member of the Berkeley Center on Comparative Equality & Anti-Discrimination Law. Since 2017, Shen has provided pro bono legal counseling through NGOs, assisting with impact litigation on transgender employment discrimination and sexual harassment cases. Her practical experience directly informs her academic research on judicial decision-making processes and equality rights.
