Fei Zhao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Comparative Biosciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's School of Veterinary Medicine. He joined the university in 2020 after completing his postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. His research focuses on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying sexual differentiation of reproductive tracts.
Dr. Zhao's research interests center on reproductive biology, sexual differentiation, and developmental biology. His laboratory investigates how sex hormones regulate reproductive tract development and how environmental chemicals that mimic sex hormones can disrupt normal differentiation processes. His work combines molecular biology, genetics, and developmental approaches to understand fundamental mechanisms of reproductive tract formation.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on Wolffian and Müllerian duct development, with an emphasis on mesenchymal-epithelial interactions, androgen signaling, and patterning mechanisms. His research employs transgenic and conditional knockout mouse models, ex vivo organ culture techniques, and genomic approaches.
Dr. Zhao currently mentors PhD student McKenna Crossen, who previously completed her MS under his supervision. His research has important implications for understanding disorders of sex development and reproductive diseases.
