Federica Bianco is an Associate Professor at the University of Delaware in the Departments of Physics and Astronomy and the Biden School of Public Policy and Administration. She also serves as a Resident Faculty in the Data Science Institute. Her roles include Deputy Project Scientist and Interim Head of Science at the Vera C. Rubin Observatory, and she coordinates the LSST Science Collaborations. She holds a BSc from the University of Bologna (2003) and a PhD in Physics from the University of Pennsylvania (2010), with postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and New York University.
Her research focuses on data-driven solutions spanning astrophysics and urban science. Key areas include time-domain astronomy, AI applications in astronomy and geography, supernova science, and urban lightcurve analysis through the Urban Observatory. She is a TED 2019 Fellow and has pioneered projects like the Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time.
Key achievements include leadership in the LSST Transients and Variable Stars Collaboration (200+ members), development of tools like SpectAcLE and DistClassiPy, and DEI initiatives such as the Anti-Black Racism Workshop. Her work bridges astrophysics and policy, addressing issues like surgical infection modeling and environmental monitoring.
