Farrokh Mistree is a Professor and holds the L.A. Comp Chair in the School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. He previously spent 17 years at Georgia Tech. His research focuses on evolving Cyber-Physical-Social (CPS) systems, public policy design, rural development, and design for small enterprises. He co-directs the Systems Realization Laboratory (SRL@OU) with Professor Janet K. Allen, emphasizing education in strategic engineering and complex systems realization.
Education:
- Ph.D., Engineering (1974), University of California, Berkeley
- M.S., Engineering (1970), University of California, Berkeley
- B.Tech (Hons.) Naval Architecture (1967), I.I.T. Kharagpur, India
Research Interests: Mistree’s work spans CPS systems, policy design, and education. Key areas include platformization for decision support, predictive analytics with limited data, and knowledge-based management of computational complexity. His team explores CPS systems for policy-making, focusing on energy, sustainability, and education. They advocate for a multidisciplinary approach to address grand challenges via CPS frameworks.
Recent Trends in Publications: His recent work emphasizes multi-agent systems, surrogate models for complexity management, and decision support frameworks for supply networks. Articles highlight CPS applications in policy, energy systems, and sustainable development. Themes include self-organizing systems, adaptive algorithms, and robust design methodologies.
Awards:
- Pahl-Beitz ICONN Award (2023)
- Lifetime Achievement Award, International Society for Agile Manufacturing (2012)
- Distinguished Alumnus, IIT Kharagpur (2012)
- ASME Ruth and Joel Spira Design Educator Award (2011)
Advising & Education: Co-mentored 36 doctoral and 65 master’s students, with 18 pursuing academic careers. Teaches courses like AME 4163 (Principles of Engineering Design) and AME 6970 (Preparing for a Life in Academia). His education initiatives include contextual assessment of student learning through reflection on doing.
Labs & Teams: The SRL@OU is a multicultural, multidisciplinary academic group focused on training future professors and engineers. Current projects include CPS systems for policy-making, platform-based decision support (PDSIDES), and education frameworks for Industry 4.0.
