Farid Hafez is an Assistant Teaching Professor of International Relations at William & Mary’s College of Arts & Sciences. His academic career includes a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Vienna (2009) and postdoctoral research at the University of Salzburg. He held the Distinguished Class of 1955 Visiting Professorship at Williams College (2021–2024) and served as a Fulbright Professor at UC Berkeley’s Center for Race and Gender (2017). Since 2017, he has been a non-resident Senior Researcher at Georgetown University’s The Bridge Initiative.
His research focuses on politics and religion, far-right movements, and anti-Muslim racism, with a particular emphasis on Islamophobia in Europe and globally. Key contributions include founding the Islamophobia Studies Yearbook and co-editing the European Islamophobia Report. Notable publications address topics like the Austrian Freedom Party’s influence, “Operation Luxor” (a controversial anti-Muslim police operation), and the colonial roots of anti-Muslim policies.
Hafez has received the Bruno Kreisky Award (2015) for his work on Islamophobia in Austria. His current teaching at William & Mary includes courses on far-right populism, Islamophobia, international relations, and terrorism. He actively critiques state policies targeting Muslim communities and advocates for interdisciplinary approaches to understanding systemic racism and religious marginalization.
