Faith E Adiele is a Professor and Chair of the Writing and Literature Program at California College of the Arts (CCA). She holds a BA from Harvard University, an MA from Lesley University, and two MFAs from the University of Iowa’s Writers’ Workshop. Her work bridges creative writing, cultural studies, and travel narratives. Her acclaimed memoir Meeting Faith (2005) chronicles her journey to become Thailand’s first Black Buddhist nun, earning the PEN Open Book Award. She has also published hybrid works such as Her Voice (2024) and Voice/Over (2024), which experiment with memoir and screenplay formats.
Adiele’s research interests include multicultural storytelling, diasporic identity, and socially engaged narrative. She has presented at documenta14, Cannes Film Festival, and international conferences. Her media contributions include columns for Detour: Best Stories in Black Travel, art reviews for Hyperallergic, and sleep stories for the CALM app. She co-edited Coming of Age Around the World: A Multicultural Anthology (The New Press) and founded the African Book Club at the Museum of the African Diaspora, which awards literary prizes. She previously served as the Distinguished Visiting Writer at Mills College.
Her accolades include over 25 artist residencies worldwide, such as UNESCO’s Civitella Ranieri and Yaddo Corporation. She advocates for BIPOC travel through VONA’s Traveling While BIPOC initiative and teaches courses like Creative Communities and Food Literature & Film. Her work often intersects with themes of race, migration, and cultural hybridity.
