Faidon Magkos is a Professor in Obesity and Metabolism at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and holds an honorary professorship at University College London's Faculty of Medical Sciences. With over 244 research outputs including 148 original research articles, he has established himself as a leading researcher in human metabolism, diet, and exercise science.
Magkos earned his B.Sc. in Human Nutrition & Clinical Dietetics (2000), M.Sc. in Nutrition and Exercise (2004), and Ph.D. in Human Metabolism (2008). His academic journey includes postdoctoral positions at Harokopio University and Harvard Medical School, followed by faculty appointments at Washington University School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and ultimately the University of Copenhagen.
His research focuses on human metabolism, particularly examining how diet and exercise affect health and disease. He employs sophisticated methodologies including glucose tolerance tests, hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps, DXA, MRI, MRS, tissue biopsies, and indirect calorimetry to investigate energy and substrate metabolism, lipid kinetics, and insulin sensitivity across different tissues.
His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on obesity, metabolic health, pregnancy nutrition, liver fat, and dietary interventions. His work spans clinical trials, hypothesis development, and systematic reviews, with particular attention to high-protein diets, glycemic index, and metabolic adaptations.

Magkos has secured substantial research funding totaling €37,142,381, with €8,462,007 as PI/Co-PI. He serves on editorial boards including the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition and as Associate Editor for Clinical Nutrition and Frontiers in Nutrition. His research has been supported by major organizations including AHA, NIH/NIDDK, A*STAR, NMRC, NNF, DFF, Nestle, and Arla.
He leads a research program investigating the mechanisms by which diet and exercise alter physiological function, with particular interest in obesity, diabetes, and metabolic disorders. His work bridges basic science with clinical applications, creating a comprehensive understanding of human metabolism.
