Dr. Fabrizio Mazzonna is Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Economics at Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), where he also directs the Center for Economic and Political Research on Aging (CEPRA). He holds a Ph.D. in Econometrics from the University of Rome Tor Vergata (2011) and was a Senior Researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Munich.
His research examines socioeconomic determinants of health and cognition across the lifespan:
- Health and cognitive impacts of aging and retirement
- Economic consequences of migration and cultural factors
- Mental health economics and pharmaceutical policy
- Long-term effects of economic shocks on health
- Environmental influences on health outcomes
Dr. Mazzonna's publications employ applied microeconometrics to investigate health disparities, policy impacts, and behavioral economics questions. Recent work analyzes low-value healthcare consequences, skilled immigration effects, COVID-19 spread patterns, and cognitive awareness in aging populations. His research frequently utilizes natural experiments and quasi-experimental designs to establish causal relationships.
He serves as a founding board member of the Swiss Society of Health Economics and organizes biennial workshops with NBER on Health and Aging.
