Fabian Waleffe is a Professor with a joint appointment in the Department of Mathematics and Department of Engineering Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He serves as the AMEP Coordinator and conducts research primarily in fluid dynamics and turbulence. His work focuses on fundamental aspects of shear flows, exact coherent states, and self-sustaining processes in turbulence.
Professor Waleffe's research centers on understanding turbulence in fluid flows through mathematical modeling and computational methods. Key interests include:
- Development of the Self-Sustaining Process (SSP) theory for shear flows
- Discovery of exact coherent structures in Navier-Stokes equations
- Analysis of turbulence mechanisms in plane Couette, Poiseuille, and pipe flows
- Geophysical flow dynamics and computational techniques for PDEs
His publications consistently explore turbulence mechanisms, coherent structures, and nonlinear dynamics in shear flows. Recent work emphasizes the mathematical foundations of turbulence through exact solutions of Navier-Stokes equations and their implications for understanding turbulent systems.
