Professor Ewa Magdalena Goldys serves as Deputy Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Nanoscale Biophotonics (CNBP) at the University of New South Wales, where she oversees partnerships, knowledge transfer and research commercialisation for this $40 million initiative (ARC investment of $23 million matched by $17 million from partners). With over 30 years of research leadership, she has established herself as an internationally recognized expert in biophotonics and nanoscale imaging techniques.
Professor Goldys' pioneering research focuses on advanced fluorescence techniques applied to biomedicine and nanotechnology. Her foundational achievement is the development of a novel analytical method for non-invasive, label-free autofluorescence characterization, which provides a collective metabolic 'fingerprint' capable of distinguishing healthy from diseased cells in conditions including cancer, diabetes and motor neurone disease. She has also led significant research on fluorescent and luminescent nanomaterials for biological applications, introducing innovative nanoparticle designs for high contrast imaging using time-gating approaches.

Professor Goldys has received numerous prestigious awards recognizing her research excellence, including the 2016 Eureka Award for Innovative Use of Technology, SPIE Fellowship (2018), and Australian Academy for Technology and Engineering Fellowship (2017). Her work has been published in elite journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Photonics, and Nature Communications.
As a dedicated mentor, Professor Goldys has supervised over 20 PhD students to completion and mentored more than 30 early career researchers, nine of whom secured competitive externally funded fellowships under her guidance. She has secured over $60 million in competitive research funding through 10 ARC Discovery Projects, 5 ARC Linkage Projects, 12 ARC LIEF awards, and an NHMRC Project. Her research program has led to 15 industry-funded projects, three spinoff companies, and 11 translational research outcomes with nine more planned.
Professor Goldys established the Optical Characterisation Facility at Macquarie University (over $2M investment) and has initiated and chaired 11 international conferences including SPIE 'Biophotonics Australasia'. She serves as Track Chair for Nanobiophotonics and Conference Chair at BIOS, the world's largest international biomedical optics meeting.
