Evren Uzer is an Associate Professor of Strategic Design and Urban Practice at Parsons School of Design, The New School in New York City. She specializes in civic engagement, critical heritage studies, and feminist spatial practices. Her research focuses on activism, community collaboration, and reconciliation in urban contexts. She has held prior academic positions at institutions including the University of Gothenburg and the Istanbul Technical University. She leads initiatives such as the "Community Engagement 101" curricular research project and the "Foundations: Teaching and Learning Frameworks for Equitable Community Engagement" course, collaborating with Cynthia Lawson-Jaramillo and Michele Kahane.
Evren holds a PhD and BSc in Urban and Regional Planning, and an MSc in Urban Design, all from Istanbul Technical University. Her doctoral thesis (2010) investigated cultural heritage at risk. She has also been a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Gothenburg's School of Design and Crafts (2013-2015), focusing on heritage activism, followed by work on the "Reconciliatory Heritage" project funded by the Swedish Research Council (2016-2021).
Her research interests span activism within urban planning, critical heritage studies emphasizing resistance and reconciliation, and feminist spatial practices. She prioritizes co-design and equitable community engagement, partnering with NYC-based organizations and public agencies. Her work addresses economic resilience, cultural diversity, public health, and environmental sustainability, particularly for low- and moderate-income communities.
In addition to her academic roles, Evren has secured grants such as the "Reconciliatory Heritage" project funded by the Swedish Research Council (2016-2021). She collaborates extensively with community organizations and public agencies on co-design and engagement projects, reflecting her commitment to equitable urban development. Her teaching spans courses like Design Research Capstone, Integrated Design Studio, and Radical Podcasts, emphasizing practical, community-focused learning.
Evren’s professional affiliations include the Collective for Community, Culture and Environment (CCCE), an interdisciplinary collective addressing economic resilience and environmental sustainability, and roomservices, an artistic collaboration focused on DIY urbanism and experimental design. These initiatives emphasize advocacy planning, co-design, and non-conventional publishing methods.
