Dr. Evgeny Semchenko is a Research Fellow at Griffith University's Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics, focusing on pathogenic Neisseria since 2013. He leads research into glycan-dependent host-pathogen interactions, immune evasion mechanisms, and vaccine development against antibiotic-resistant gonorrhea. His work integrates glycobiology, immunology, and drug discovery to combat infectious diseases.
- Education: PhD (Griffith University), BSc (Honours) (University of New England)
- Affiliations: Institute for Biomedicine and Glycomics (2024–present), former Institute for Glycomics member (2013–2024)
Research interests center on Neisseria gonorrhoeae and meningitidis, particularly glycan-binding profiles, bacterial colonization dynamics, and vaccine candidate optimization. Key projects include the MenGO trial assessing cross-protection of 4CMenB vaccine and the development of NHBA/MetQ-based vaccines. He supervises doctoral students investigating gonococcal virulence factors and vaccine targets.
Recent articles highlight advancements in vaccine antigen refinement, antibiotic susceptibility modulation via efflux pump inhibition, and the potential carcinogenic link of gonorrhea. His work aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health).
- Funding: NIH-supported grant (2020–2025) for vaccine antigen analysis, Griffith University internal grants
- Professional activities: Contributed to Institute for Glycomics' gonorrhea vaccine initiatives
Labs/Teams: Part of the Institute's research group focused on biomedical glycobiology and translational medicine.
