Even Smith Wergeland is an Associate Professor at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, specializing in architectural history, planning history, and architectural heritage. He serves as director of the executive master’s programme in architectural preservation and leads the Oslo Centre for Critical Architectural Studies (OCCAS). His interdisciplinary research spans sports architecture, mobility studies, urban preservation, adaptive re-use, and sonic heritage, with a current book project on the architecture and geography of sound studios.
Wergeland's research explores the intersection of built environments with cultural practices and sensory experiences. Key interests include the transformation of industrial spaces, acoustic properties of sports arenas, subterranean design ecologies, and the sociocultural dimensions of mobility infrastructures. His work frequently examines how historical layers inform contemporary urban challenges.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals strong thematic clusters: sustainable stadium design (2021), participatory heritage practices (2021), sonic environments (2020), bodily engagement with space (2019-2021), and transformations of transportation infrastructure (2015). The works consistently blend architectural theory with anthropological approaches to urban experience.
