William Hailiang Chen is a Lecturer at Norwich University of the Arts, teaching BA (Hons) and MArch Architecture programs. He is also Co-founder and Director of Creative Prototyping Unit, a multidisciplinary design studio with offices in London and Beijing. Chen holds a Research Fellowship at Southeast University's AS Research Centre, where he led postgraduate courses on sports facilities and urban regeneration. His educational background includes fine arts training at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and architectural studies at London's Architectural Association School of Architecture.
Chen's research explores the intersection of architecture, technology, and cultural consciousness. His work spans large-scale architectural projects like the London 2012 Olympic Stadium and Guangzhou IFC Tower, as well as experimental installations. Key research areas include adaptive sports facility design, responsive environments through projects like ResoNet, and urban regeneration strategies that merge functionality with artistic innovation.
His publications focus on architectural transformation and participatory design, with recent articles examining how sports infrastructure catalyzes urban renewal. Chen's award-winning ResoNet series demonstrates consistent innovation in responsive environments, while theoretical work advances discourse on cultural heritage integration in contemporary design.
Chen's honors include the 2022 Asian Design Prize, 2021 Architizer A+Design Special Mention, and multiple A' Design Awards. His teaching excellence earned him the 2018 Outstanding Teacher Award from China's Architectural Society. Additional recognition includes first prizes in international competitions like the 'Bright LED' competition and Environmental Tectonic Competition.
As Research Fellow at Southeast University, Chen developed curriculum on sports architecture and urban regeneration. His Creative Prototyping Unit serves as a laboratory for experimental design, developing installations showcased at venues including Beijing Design Week and Shanghai's Sinan Mansion. Chen frequently lectures on stadium design innovation, having presented at events like the iSportconnect Madrid Summit and Host City Asia Forum.
