Evelyn Carnegie is the Head of Department of Sport and Physical Activity at Edge Hill University, leading the senior management team and serving as Programme Leader for the undergraduate sports therapy programme. She joined Edge Hill in 1997 as a lecturer in Sports Psychology and became Head of Department in 2001. Her tenure saw significant expansion of the department's academic portfolio. She holds a PhD and BA (Hons) in Sports Studies from Ulster University (1997 and 1992, respectively). Her teaching spanned undergraduate and postgraduate sports psychology modules at Ulster University before her move to Edge Hill.
Her research focuses on visual perception-action dynamics in sport and skill acquisition, particularly ocular motor control mechanisms impacting performance in sports and clinical education settings. Key research groups include the Sports Performance, Exercise and Nutrition Research Group and Sport & Exercise Performance, Enhancement & (P)rehabilitation. Recent work emphasizes OPTIMAL theory's application in children's motor learning and physical education.
Evelyn has supervised at least two major academic works: Laura Houghton's 2016 study and another 2015 project. Her publications span 1996–2024, with emphasis on motor performance, attentional strategies, and educational interventions. Notable articles include studies on visual illusions in motor tasks and autonomy-supportive instruction efficacy in physical education.
