Evan Macosko is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He leads the Macosko Lab at the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, focusing on understanding cellular specialization in the nervous system through innovative genomics technologies. His work bridges molecular neuroscience, genomics, and computational biology. Dr. Macosko holds an MD and PhD, with doctoral training in C. elegans neuroscience at The Rockefeller University under Cori Bargmann, followed by postdoctoral research in Steve McCarroll’s lab at HMS/Broad.
- Education:
- PhD: The Rockefeller University
- MD: Not explicitly stated, but indicated through titles and clinical practice
His research develops tools like Drop-seq for high-throughput single-cell transcriptional profiling and spatial genomics approaches to map brain cell diversity. Current projects include creating cell-type atlases of mammalian brains and investigating genetic/environmental influences on brain cell function. He also practices psychiatry part-time at MGH’s outpatient clinic.
Lab members include over 20 researchers, from postdocs to undergraduates, working on projects like Slide-seq (spatial genomics) and the first comprehensive mouse brain cell atlas. Future efforts target extending these methods to human brain tissues and understanding disease mechanisms in psychiatric conditions.
